EMDR & Ego States

What are ego states? How do they apply to therapy? How can ego state therapy be of use in EMDR Therapy? What is all this hype about parts work anyway?!

Ego state therapy is a powerful therapeutic approach. This model recognizes that the human psyche is dynamic and multi-dimensional, and uses "parts work" to foster integration of the self. Ego states therapy is a psychotherapy that belongs in any trauma clinician's tool box, especially for those practicing EMDR Therapy.

What Is Ego State Therapy?

Ego state therapy is a “parts” work approach for facilitating integration and healing.  “Parts” can be understood as bundles of neural networks, which have failed to integrate. These parts are ego states, and everyone has them. These ego states are created based on our life experiences which have left us wounded and fragmented.

This advanced training will teach EMDR clinicians how to integrate ego state therapy into your EMDR therapy practice.

We will review methods for screening for dissociation and how to develop a plan to prepare the client’s internal system for EMDR. Key terms and concepts of ego state therapy will be reviewed and defined. We will review the Theory of Structural Dissociation, as a leading model for conceptualization dissociation. You will learn a variety of ego state therapy skills to support preparation work as well as skills to foster target reprocessing. Participants will also learn how to practice Fraser’s Dissociative Table technique, and how this intervention can inform and aid in the therapeutic process.

Ego state therapy and EMDR are necessities for any trauma therapist, and a requirement for those working with complex trauma and dissociation. This powerful therapy will boost your case conceptualization and intervention skills, and bolster your EMDR Therapy.
