EMDR and Somatic Therapy:
The body as a portal for healing
Learning to listen to the body is an essential skill for treating trauma. These untold stories remain stuck, keeping our clients entrapped in their pasts.
Join Alison Leslie, and learn to listen to the story of your client’s experiences through both their words and the story of the body. We will conceptualize stuck points and guide the completion of stuck and unhelpful self-protective responses with mind-body techniques. You will learn the tenets of Somatic Experiencing, including the five processing channels, known as SIBAM (Sensation, Image, Behavior, and Meaning). You’ll receive guidance in integrating somatic therapy techniques to give clients access to deeper levels of healing and movement.
LIVE: Sept 29, 2023 | 9am-4:30PM MTN
This training will be recorded on Sept 29th, 2023.
Available for synchronous-online or asynchronous-on demand learning.
Course Details
The body tells the unresolved story of trauma. Learn to listen and help your clients heal with somatic therapy and EMDR.
As Bessel van der Kolk teaches us, “the body keeps the score.” Mind-body techniques are vital skills that must be used in therapy for trauma healing and transformation. This training will teach you to speak the language of the body, and powerful techniques for integrating somatic therapy into the 8 phases of EMDR.
Inviting in curiosity, slowing down the process, and exploring invitational language will be a theme throughout the course.
Identifying the importance of pendulation and titration practices throughout the 8 phases of EMDR and how this supports a client-centered approach to healing will be identified. You will learn how to use these techniques in specific ways to help build capacity for both comfortable and uncomfortable sensations, which is essential to successful EMDR desensitization.
Lastly, we will explore how self-protective mechanisms can be thwarted in moments of overwhelming experiences and how to help the body move toward resolution.

Learning Objectives
Integrate somatic therapy techniques and the SIBAM model throughout the 8 phases of EMDR.
Develop awareness of verbal and non-verbal cues that inform case conceptualization and treatment planning.
Evaluate embodiment exercises to support clients coming into contact with the body in new ways.
Appraise the use of pendulation and titration techniques to expand a client’s window of tolerance.
Apply somatic therapy interventions in Phase 4 Desensitization to facilitate target reprocessing.
Support clients in developing interoception and somatic awareness as a vital Phase 2 Preparation technique.
