Course Details

The Generational Trauma course, presented by Erika A. Yourdan, Ph.D. Candidate, LMFT-S, LAC, LCDC, provides a comprehensive exploration of the pervasive effects of trauma passed down through generations. The course begins by defining generational trauma, explaining that it involves the transmission of trauma’s psychological, physiological, and social impacts from one generation to the next, even if subsequent generations have not directly experienced the original traumatic event. This transmission can result in a wide array of challenges, including substance use, emotional dysregulation, and long-term psychological effects such as anxiety and depression.

The course delves into the neurobiological and epigenetic changes associated with generational trauma, highlighting how these changes can alter the stress response and affect behaviors and health outcomes in future generations. It also explores the multifaceted impact of generational trauma on individuals, families, and communities, discussing how it can impair social and emotional growth, disrupt academic and occupational functioning, and lead to cultural disconnection and spiritual damage. The course emphasizes the importance of understanding the intersectionality of trauma, recognizing how cultural considerations and diversity influence the experience and transmission of generational trauma.

A significant portion of the course focuses on strategies for breaking the cycle of generational trauma. It advocates for an integrative approach that includes both individual and systemic interventions, such as building internal and external resources, promoting human-oriented and shame-free care, and increasing access to culturally competent services. The course encourages therapists to do their own personal work to understand their biases and limitations, as well as to create safe and supportive environments for their clients. By equipping therapists with these tools, the course aims to empower them to help clients reclaim their agency and heal from the deep wounds of generational trauma.
