Course Details

The Basics of Traumatology course, presented by Crystal Wildes, provides an essential overview of the fundamental concepts of traumatology. The course begins by defining trauma, emphasizing that it is not just the event itself, but the impact it has on an individual’s mind and body. It covers how trauma affects the brain, particularly the amygdala, hippocampus, and prefrontal cortex, which are crucial in processing emotions, memories, and decision-making. The course also explores the different types of trauma, including acute, chronic, and complex trauma, and how each type can have distinct effects on a person’s psychological and physical well-being.

A significant portion of the course is dedicated to understanding the body’s physiological responses to trauma. It delves into the autonomic nervous system’s role in trauma, explaining the fight, flight, freeze, and fawn responses, and how these survival mechanisms are triggered in response to traumatic experiences. The course also discusses the long-term impact of trauma on the body, including how unresolved trauma can lead to chronic stress, anxiety, depression, and a host of physical health issues such as cardiovascular disease and autoimmune disorders.

The course further explores the importance of trauma-informed care, stressing the need for therapists to create safe, supportive environments where clients can begin to process and heal from their traumatic experiences. It highlights the importance of understanding trauma’s pervasive impact on a person’s life and the necessity of integrating this awareness into therapeutic practices. The course provides practical strategies for recognizing the signs of trauma, working with clients in a way that minimizes re-traumatization, and fostering resilience and recovery.

Overall, the Basics of Traumatology course equips therapists with a foundational understanding of trauma and its effects, offering the tools and knowledge necessary to effectively support clients who have experienced trauma. It serves as an essential resource for any mental health professional seeking to enhance their practice and provide compassionate, informed care to those affected by trauma.
