Internal Family Systems (IFS) – Informed EMDR
Do you encounter blocks and defenses that are impacting the client’s therapy work, and you feel lost in where to go next? Maybe you keep hearing about “parts work” being discussed in your consultation group, and it seems important to learn, but you’re left feeling confused – what are parts, and how do I start? Or perhaps you know a bit about “parts work”–you might have even used the dissociative table–but now find yourself unsure of how to integrate this with your EMDR practice and what the next steps are? Our IFS Informed EMDR Course is for you!Â
Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy offers us a helpful framework to navigate these complex blocks and defenses by honoring and welcoming these parts of self. IFS is a beautiful companion for EMDR. If you’re eager to dive deeper into how to practically use “parts work” and IFS along with your foundational EMDR skills – this course is for you.

Course Details
The Integration of Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy course offers mental health professionals an in-depth exploration of two highly effective therapeutic modalities and their integration for a comprehensive approach to healing trauma and promoting well-being. This course provides a unique opportunity to learn how to integrate the transformative power of IFS therapy’s internal system work with the phases of EMDR therapy.
This IFS-Informed EMDR advanced training offers an opportunity to gain skills in working with client’s protective systems. Supporting these systems can help clients feel safe enough to do the deeper work of EMDR Therapy. Some examples of parts include the over-intellectualizer, the perfectionist, and the critic, to name a few. A client may feel like they have to do EMDR perfectly and they don’t know what you are wanting them to say during check-ins, or they are stuck in their thoughts and can’t touch into their feelings, or they start to allow themselves to feel vulnerable but then they are pulled out of their emotions by an intellectual/rationalizer part.
The first day of training will focus on understanding the core principles of IFS Therapy. We will review the theoretical framework of IFS, develop clinical skills in recognizing and being with the protective parts of our clients, and identify a path for therapists to support clients in cultivating more compassion and understanding for parts of themselves.
The second day of training will focus on case conceptualization using IFS concepts and techniques, and connecting those to the eight phases of EMDR. We will learn practical strategies to help the protective parts of our clients to feel witnessed and understood to enhance the effectiveness of trauma processing and integration with EMDR Therapy. This course consists of a combination of didactic presentations, large group experiential exercises, case discussions, and demonstrations to facilitate a comprehensive understanding and practical application of the integrated approach.
