Course Details
Robin Shapiro, prolific author and veteran EMDR practitioner and consultant, offers an array of insights and strategies during this 6-hour training divided into six separate topics.
There will be brief reminders to learn Flash or 4 Blinks techniques, and EMDR 2.0. Then a short review of EMDR and Polyvagal techniques for working with MCS, tinnitus, chronic pain, and Long COVID.
In the first section, participants learn how to install resources of present safety and current strengths in the preparation phase of EMDR. These include powerful alternatives for clients who can’t visualize a “safe place.” The Two-Hand Interweave, developed as a powerful EMDR tool by Robin Shapiro, has multiple applications and is specifically presented in this training as a somatically-informed method of distinguishing between choices, dangers, and other phenomena, generally used in the Preparation Phase.
The EMDR with Anxiety section covers working with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Phobias and the “nervous” people who come to therapy with non-trauma related anxiety.
Attachment Focused EMDR introduces ways to work with clients who have deficits, shame, and trauma from lack of secure attachment in their childhood. It includes April Steele’s Imaginal Nurturing, Maureen Kitchur’s clearing of preverbal trauma, and use of the therapeutic relationship to “wire in” healthy attachment.
Finally, in the EMDR with Couples section, powerful applications of EMDR are discussed for assisting those working on relationships- both inside and outside of couple’s therapy sessions – to move out of old habits, clear interpersonal trauma, and use the future template to bring in new adaptive ways to interact. These methods are relevant for therapists working with clients individually on relationship issues as well as for those working with couples.
Live SchedulE
15 minutes: EMDR with Chronic Pain, MCS, Tinnitus, and Long Covid
15 minutes: Resourcing Current Safety
- Why some clients can’t utilize “Safe Place” exercises.
- How to use clients’ current life situations, age, body strength, adult skills, adult support, and time and distance from the past trauma to ground clients in the present and prepare them for trauma reprocessing
- Facilitating trauma reprocessing and assisting the client to maintain dual awareness of the safe present and the past danger.
60 minutes: Two-Hand Interweave
- Why and how the somatic exercise of the Two-Hand can be helpful.
- How to use the Two-Hand to differentiate between the past external danger and the present internal fears.
- Using the Two-Hand to differentiate between a projection and the actual other person

- A lovely OCD protocol from Marsha Whisman.
- How to lead clients through the past, present and future associations while calming the body, attacking negative cognitions, and leading a full life, despite a having a highly sensitive nervous system.

- How to utilize attachment-enhancing interventions throughout the arc of the Eight Phases of EMDR therapy, starting with the first client contact, moving through attachment-wise history-taking, and treatment planning, and continuing through appropriate targets, cognitions, and interweaves.

What’s This Course Covers
Robin offers an array of insights and strategies during this 6-hour training to tackle the difficult pain points such as:
- Feeling stuck with distressing neurological conditions like tinnitus, chronic pain, MCS, or Long COVID
- Working with clients for whom the imaginary “Safe Place” doesn’t promote a sense of current safety or the ability to have the dual attention necessary to do helpful EMDR.
- Feeling ineffective for not healing clients who are wired for anxiety, and what to do instead.
Feeling frustration of clients who can’t connect or who are constantly projecting “badness” on the therapist. - Feeling overwhelmed in trying to stop couples’ projection on each other, and getting their adult selves in the room.
Learning Objectives
- Describe how to cement clients’ dual attention by resourcing the safe present time, and the strong, skilled present body.
- Describe how to use the Two-Hand Interweave to help clients develop affect awareness, differentiate between past and future, and distinguish reality from projection.
- Distinguish between trauma-based and genetically-influenced anxiety, and use EMDR to treat both.
- Lead clients through the three prongs in the first case, and through having clients practice calming the body, attacking negative cognitions, and having a full life, despite a tendency to have anxiety.
- Describe attachment-enhancing interventions throughout the Eight Phases of EMDR therapy, starting with the first client contact, moving through attachment-wise history-taking, and treatment planning, and continuing through appropriate targets, cognitions, and interweaves.
- Describe methods to assess and plan treatment traumatic and/or attachment disruptions
- Describe how to use the future template within EMDR to install new and chosen behavior between partners.
