Course Details

AVAILABLE ON-DEMAND

This course is for any EMDR therapist who wants to take their clinical work to a new level. If you’re in love with Polyvagal Theory, or are looking for a place to learn this model, this course is for you! We will review the basic principles of Polyvagal Theory and how to apply this knowledge to case conceptualization and treatment planning. We will review the power of the social engagement system and its role in therapy and EMDR-focused work. The concept of therapeutic presence will be explored and its clinical relevance to the counseling process.

We will learn how to “warm up” EMDR therapy and why putting greater emphasis on the interpersonal relationship is key.

You will learn several concrete Polyvagal informed interventions to prepare your clients for memory reprocessing. Participants will learn Rebecca Kase’s Preparation Hierarchy model, which offers a clear road map for identifying skills needed for reprocessing and determining client readiness for desensitization. We will review the many overlaps of Polyvagal Theory and AIP, and how to integrate this model throughout the 8 phases of EMDR therapy.

Learning objectives

  • Describe at least two core premises of Polyvagal Theory.
  • Analyze the three circuits of the autonomic nervous system, and describe correlated physical and psychological symptoms for each circuit.
  • Explain how the social engagement system is influenced by autonomic defenses.
  • Assess commonalities between Polyvagal Theory and AIP, and describe how to apply these theoretical models to case conceptualization.
  • Describe at least two premises of the social engagement system, and how those premises relate to the client-therapist relationship.
  • List at least two of the four domains of the Preparation Hierarchy, along with corresponding interventions.
  • Analyze the components of the Phase 3 Assessment EMDR protocol through the lens of Polyvagal Theory.
  • List at least two Polyvagal informed interweaves.
  • Explain how Polyvagal Theory relate to phases 5 & 6 of EMDR reprocessing.
  • Explain the role of Polyvagal Theory in Phase 7 closure, and at least 2 techniques to close an EMDR reprocessing session.

Disordered eating can take many forms–yoyo dieting, strict food rules, eliminating food groups, feeling out of control with food, skipping meals, numbing through food, purging, excessive exercise, and countless other ways. At the core of disordered eating and body image issues is often the deep-seeded belief of “I’m not okay as I am”, shrouded in intense shame. Many clients turn towards disordered eating to cope with trauma and attachment wounds, presenting a complicated treatment landscape for therapists who feel stuck with the question: “Where do I begin?”

Using EMDR Therapy with disordered eating can be a powerful healing tool but requires specialized training. This advanced training will give you the tools you need to work with this presentation with confidence and competence.

This course consists of lecture and demonstration videos.

Ego state therapy is a “parts” work approach for facilitating integration and healing.  “Parts” can be understood as bundles of neural networks, which have failed to integrate. These parts are ego states, and everyone has them. These ego states are created based on our life experiences which have left us wounded and fragmented.

This advanced training will teach EMDR clinicians how to integrate ego state therapy into your EMDR therapy practice.

Ego state therapy and EMDR are necessities for any trauma therapist, and a requirement for those working with complex trauma and dissociation. This powerful therapy will boost your case conceptualization and intervention skills, and bolster your EMDR Therapy.

Learning objectives

  • Explain at least two ways Ego State Therapy can support EMDR Therapy.
  • Explain the difference between Emotional Parts (EP) & Apparently Normal Parts (ANP)
  • Apply knowledge of parts and ego states to case conceptualization.

  • Identify three approaches to assess for dissociation.

EMDR & C-PTSD

Course Details

available on-demand

Working with Complex PTSD can be, well, complex. It requires a large toolkit to help clients learn ways to regulate and soothe, and to feel feelings and sensations. It also requires advanced skill on the clinician’s part to navigate treatment plans and desensitize targets in a way that doesn’t destabilize or overwhelm the client’s nervous system.

This advanced course will help you fill up your Complex PTSD toolkit.

We’ll review Polyvagal Theory-inspired case conceptualization skills that will help you identify treatment goals and plan skillful interventions. We’ll also review a number of useful preparation tools that are commonly needed with Complex Trauma presentations. Participants will learn the method of Reflexive Orienting, a Rebecca Kase-inspired technique for working with highly charged and dysregulating targets.

Learning objectives

  • Assess the usefulness of EMDR with CPTSD presentations and review contraindications for EMDR-based interventions.
  • Evaluate research and recommendations for the treatment of CPTSD, common clinical symptoms, and treatment guidelines.
  • Analyze core principles of Polyvagal Theory and appraise their application to EMDR Phases 1 & 2.
  • Utilize interventions to resource and stabilize clients with CPTSD.
  • Determine interventions to increase somatic awareness.
  • Integrate at least two techniques into your clinical practice with clients to increase dual awareness.
  • Appraise the usefulness of EMD & EMDR techniques for working with CPTSD clients and reducing intrusive and destabilizing symptoms.
  • Develop an EMDR treatment plan for CPTSD clients using the fractionated target technique.
